Parents are often told to “just ignore it”. The crying, whining, big reactions like kids don’t have real feelings or valid needs :/ That advice? It’s called planned ignoring, and while it has a place in certain situations, it’s often thrown around waaay too casually. Here’s the thing: kids deserve to be treated like the little humans they are🥹, not problems to be tuned out. If a child is communicating through behavior, the answer isn’t silence it’s support🫶🏼

When you start responding with intention instead of reacting from survival, you begin breaking generational cycles. It’s not easy work, but it’s powerful💛

Stimming: short for self-stimulatory behavior, is a natural and important part of how many people, especially neurodivergent individuals, regulate emotions, process sensory input, and feel good in their bodies! Vocal or auditory stims are a type of stim that involve sounds, words, or phrases repeated out loud. It might be a hum, a squeak, a catchphrase, or even a specific tone of voice. They’re often not random, there’s comfort, joy, or regulation built into them, even if they don’t “make sense” to others. 💡 From a behavior analytic lens, stimming can be automatically reinforced, meaning the behavior continues because it feels good or serves a personal sensory or emotional need. It’s a form of self-expression and regulation that doesn’t need to be stopped just because it’s different. Instead of suppressing harmless stims, let’s normalize them, understand their function, and support individuals in expressing themselves freely and safely. 💛 Do you ever catch yourself singing the same song over and over again? Or replaying that one part of a video or sound that just hits right? That’s not so different from vocal stimming, it’s something many of us do! Let us know your current go-to sound or phrase that always seems to sneak into your day. This moment made me smile so hard. 🥹 My 3-year-old daughter chanting “Mama, tú puedes” as I ran and my heart melted. It was a perfect example of positive reinforcement. Not because it was “positive” in a feel-good way, but because she added something (vers praise), and it increased the likelihood that I’d keep running. This is also ABA. Not just autism therapy. Not just clinic settings. It’s the science of behavior and it’s happening all around us. She’s learning it because I model it. I cheer her on, I reinforce her efforts, and now… she’s doing it to me. 🥹 Reinforcement is personal. Not everyone is motivated by praise. It only works if it increases behavior. That’s why connection, relationship, and knowing your person is everything. 🤩 Use what matters to THEM and you might just see them using it right back on you. 💛
